Foreign Languages
At Foothills, we know that creating authentic foreign language learning opportunities for young children, and consistent foreign language education for all children, will enhance their ability to learn in many areas. All of us exist in a world organized through various symbolic systems, many of which are embodied in the language of particular cultures. To provide our students with the best approach to foreign language instruction, Foothills School balances language acquisition with cultural understanding in our core language curriculum - Spanish.
The Spanish curriculum at Foothills School is based on Standards of Foreign Language Learning, national guidelines that establish the following core goals:
- Communication - Communicate in Languages Other than English
- Culture - Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures
- Connections - Connect with Other Disciplines and Acquire Information
- Comparisons - Gain Insight Into the Nature of Language and Culture
- Communities - Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World
To help students realize their potential in Spanish, instruction happens a little each and every day in the student's home classroom. This is the structure for Spanish from pre-school through 8th grade. In the Nines Program, Spanish language instruction is elevated to a credit-bearing experience for our students.
Additonal Language Opportunties
In addition to the Spanish language requirement, the electives program at Foothills has provided ample opportunity for students to gain exposure to a wide variety of languages. CHOICE classes have included American Sign Language, French, Latin, and Chinese.
