Foothills Parents Association (FPA)

Foothills School has an active parents group called the Foothills Parents Association (FPA) and all Foothills parents are members. Katy Young coordinates the FPA with FPA officers and organizes the FPA’s work plan and goals for the year. For 2016-17, the FPA’s goals are focused on increasing parent leadership within the FPA and increasing and systematizing parent volunteerism both school-wide and at the classroom level. We are also focusing on new family mentoring and social engagement for parents to help them feel a strong sense of school-wide community.

The FPA encourages parents to attend key events throughout the year to get to know other community members, and several of these happen in the fall, including the Family Picnic the first week of school, Back to School Night, and Class Parent Parties. We’ve designed these events to help families connect, enjoy themselves, and learn more about the school community.

We have many opportunities for parents to volunteer at the school and hope all families find ways to contribute to our community that fit with their families’ interests. From volunteering at the classroom level for field trips and lunch-out to helping out with all-school events, we hope you will share your time, expertise and interests with our community. The FPA will be communicating with parents during the first month of school about how to get involved.

To stay abreast of FPA happenings throughout the year, we strongly suggest that parents attend at least some of our FPA meetings held in the Parents' Lounge at Foothills. Here is the meeting schedule for 2016-17:

  • 1.Thursday, September 15 (8:30-9:15 a.m.)
  • 2.Thursday, October 20 (8:30-9:15 a.m.)
  • 3.Thursday, December 8 (6:00-7:00 p.m.) – book discussion (Beyond Measure)
  • 4.Thursday, January 19 (8:30-9:15 a.m.)
  • 5.Thursday, March 9 (6:00-7:00 p.m.)
  • 6.Thursday, April 13 (8:30-9:15 a.m.)

Agendas will be shared with parents ahead of the meeting and minutes of meetings will be shared with those who aren’t able to attend. At most meetings, members of the school community will be present to share about various aspects of progressive education, what students are learning in different classes, and parents will be asked to contribute topics for discussion as well. We will also host two evening meetings and will discuss the book Beyond Measure by Vicki Abeles (copies are available for loan in the front office) at our December 8 meeting.

We have amazing parents at Foothills and you make us a stronger school with your continued support and participation. We look forward to working with you in 2016-17!
