'Volando Voy': A Flamenco Dance and Music Appreciation Class w/ Estefania La Ishi

Participants in this class will clap their hands, stomp their feet, and move their arms and fingers to the beat of the song 'Volando Voy'. We will focus on a short list of words such as 'Arriba' (up), 'Abajo' (down), los brazos (arms), los pies (feet), and las manos (hands), to build a foundation in Spanish language. Games will also make learning a short dance routine fun, and keep the energy going throughout the class. The theme of the class is Volar, 'To Fly', and with Flamenco music as our guide, we will fly straight to Spain and back in one short hour.

Flamenco, the traditional dance of Southern Spain, is an artform that incorporates rhythm, song and dance. Flamenco is Incorporated into daily life of Andalusian natives as a means for emotional and individual expression inside a group or community setting. Flamenco has earned recognition as a World Heritage Art by UNESCO.

During the last class, May 22, at 3:45p, we invite parents and friends to watch a final performance. The Cajon Class will perform the rhythms, while the Flamenco Class dances. Don’t miss this!

Cajon (Box Drum) w/ Luis de La Tota

There is a rhythm to everything: the flight of a bee, the beat of your heart, tick tock of a clock. If you like drums, beats, clapping your hands, and snapping your fingers, let's have some fun with Spanish numbers and Flamenco beats together! In this class students will practice Flamenco rhythms featuring the Cajon (box drum). This class will work in 4 and 8 count rhythms, exploring a variety of rhythmic patterns and how they layer together in Flamenco. This class lays a great foundation for music appreciation and music pattern recognition. Through games and learning to interact musically, the group builds on community-based thinking and leadership. During the last class, May 22, at 3:45p, we invite parents and friends to watch a final performance. The Cajon Class will perform the rhythms, while the Flamenco Class dances. Don’t miss this!
