Gifts of Securities and Stock
You may achieve tax savings by making your gift via stocks or other capital assets. If your donation appreciates and is a marketable security that you have owned for more than one year and one day, you may receive a charitable deduction for the full market value on the date of the transfer. Neither you nor Foothills School will be required to pay capital gains tax on this type of gift. If you have securities that have decreased in value, you may be able to take a deductible loss when you sell the stocks and donate the proceeds.
In-Kind Gifts
We welcome gifts of goods or services that may provide budgetary savings to the school or fulfill a particular departmental need. Per IRS guidelines, the school will not assign a dollar value to your gift but will provide a thank you letter substantiating your in-kind donation. We recommend you consult your tax advisor to explore the tax benefits specific to such a gift.
Estate and Planned Giving
Donors may wish to consider giving through such means as a will, life insurance, a bequest, or a charitable trust. These types of gifts have a noble destination: to help secure the future of our school. Your generosity not only impacts the lives of our current students but also has long-term benefits for students who will pass through our doors for years to come. These gifts may also help reduce estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering this type of gift. For more information, please contact the Development Director at (208) 331-9260.
